英语中有些词虽然看起来意思相近，但用法却不尽相同，指导并掌握它，提高自己的翻译水平。
cannot help, cannot but, cannot help but
这些词组均表示“不得不，不禁”之意。
cannot help与动名词连用，表示“不得不”是口语用法，词组中的help相当于avoid或prevent，是一种比较好的用法。
I cannot help worrying to hear that there is no steamer this week.(我听到本周没有船的消息，禁不住担忧起来。)
cannot but : 后跟不定式连用，是一种较正式的用法，主要用于美国英语。
I cannot but hope the candid reader will give some allowance for it.(我只有希望公正的读者多少包涵一些。)
cannot help but : 跟动词不定式连用，是cannot but与cannot help的混用，系书面用语，多用于美国英语。由于cannot help but含有双重否定，所以有人反对使用，认为不合习惯，但此表达法已经沿用下来。
Due to the present price level, we cannot help but adjust our offer.(由于目前的价格情况，我方不得不调整报价。)
bump, clash, collide, conflict
这些动词均含“碰撞”之意。
bump : 主要指具体东西的有力碰撞，也可指碰到困难或障碍。
eg：The driver bumped the kerb while reversing.司机倒车时撞到了路边石。
clash : 指有力的或带有金属碰击声的打、敲或相互冲击。
eg：The dustbins clashed as people emptied rubbish.垃圾桶在人们倒垃圾时发出撞击声。
collide : 多指带毁坏性的猛烈相撞，也可指严重的直接冲突。
eg：One hearing his command police has collided out that door immediately.一听到他的命令警察立即撞开了那扇门。
conflict : 这个词以前可表具体东西的撞击，现在常指冲突或对立。
eg：Do British immigration laws conflict with any international laws?英国的移民法与国际法有抵触吗?
