One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one's

mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,”and it is even harder to say,“I was wrong, and you were right about that.”

I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up,and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (箱子).Then he related(提到) an incident and I began to remember clearly the incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that day,I must have found my way to the dairy (乳品的) food department where the incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and halfdozen cartons. The cartons were stacked(堆放) three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason,I decided it was up to me to put the display back together,so I went to work.

The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared,I was on my knees examining some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal(罪犯).He severely scolded(责骂) me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I protested(抗议)my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, obviously the manager did not.

When a close friend dies, it often forces you to consider your own death. The more you have in common with the friend, the more his death will make you wonder about your own. Sometimes you will naturally say to yourself, “It could just as easily have been me.” Such a death has a way of reminding us how fragile(脆弱的)life is, and it may cause you to reassess(重新评价) the direction of your own life.

Jack’s story is a good example. A successful businessman making a lot of money, Jack didn’t spend as much time with his family as he wanted. His job required him to work long hours. But three years ago one of his best friends, a man who worked in the same office, had a heart attack. He died while celebrating his daughter’s eighteenth birthday in a restaurant. He was only fifty years old.

Not long after his friend’s death, Jack started to have a chest pain. Finally he had a good physical check-up. He received a clean bill of health. But the chest pain continued. He kept thinking of the death of his friend. Jack thought about how much his friend missed in life and he saw how hard it was for his friend’s family to manage after he passed away.

Jack realized that he didn’t want to end up his life that way. He talked his feelings over with his wife and children, and decided to change his way of life. The family moved to a small town where he started a simple life. Now he is running a small art gallery(画廊). He is relaxed, and says he has never been so happy in his life. And he has got no more chest pain.

Sometimes people give us nicknames(外号) in order to be mean or make fun of us,which can really hurt.

Four Eyes. Metal Mouth. Dumbo. Slow Poke. Crater Face. We've all heard kids calling nasty nicknames like these. Maybe you've even used similar nicknames on other kids,or been stuck with one yourself.

A playground bruise or cut usually disappears after a couple of days, but the pain and the anger coming from being called a cruel nickname can last a lot longer than that. If you've ever picked on another kid by making up or using a tease nickname,or if you've ever been on the receiving end of one,you know that names like Fatso,Smelly and Short Stuff can be very hurtful. Plus, they have a habit of sticking to us like glue(胶水)!

People use negative(消极的) nicknames as a way of keeping someone out of a group,of gaining power over someone,or of making themselves feel more important. You may know a kid in your class who always comes up with nicknames for the other kids. This student likes to feel cool by acting like the “official nicknamer ”. This can give a student a feeling of power, but that power comes at the cost of making other kids feel bad. Kids who give others hurtful nicknames are often trying to cover up the fact that they really feel bad about themselves.

Like other kinds of insults (污辱),a cruel nickname can be used to make a kid feel being left out or angry. Sometimes they're even nastier than most ways of being mean, because they can be so hard to shake off.

64.What is the best title for the passage?

A. Powerful nicknames

B. Hurtful nicknames

C. How to make fun of others?

D. How to give others a nickname?

65.According to the passage, the underlined word “bruise” in the third paragraph means“ ”.

A. joke           B. nickname         C. wound         D. game

66.A kid often gives other kids nicknames in order to .

A. show off his power

B. present his new ideas

C. win reputation

D. make himself hurt by others

D
