I might be letting my young son watch too much television. I am certainly watching too many of his programs. They can really be difficult to understand as they force you to think hard about the mysteries of life. For example, when Franklin (the turtle(乌龟))wanted a pet, his parents didn’t want it to be a frog. They felt that frogs belong in a pond.Isn’t that where turtles belong?

And why is it that Little Bear’s animal friends can all talk and behave like people, but his friend Emily has a dog that can only bark? Tell me that isn’t a mystery(神秘的事物)!

Dog lovers can be reassured(安心的) by Kipper and his friends. These dogs are very human. However, the only time they wear clothes is when they put on bathing suits to go swimming. I don’t understand! Speaking of dogs, could Pluto ever be Goofy ’s pet? I don’t get it! What did the great Mr.. Disney have in mind? And this is gross (恶心的)!The other day we watched a very nice little pig setting up a picnic. One of the foods was a big ham. Could it have been a soy (大豆) ham? Is there such a thing? I hope so!

Another thing that bothers me: What if Elmo isn’t real? He can’t be a mere puppet! He’s got a better attitude than most people. I just keep wondering.

I think we’ll turn off the TV and go out for a walk. Maybe we’ll run into that mouse who dresses well but certainly doesn’t speak as clearly as the average bear.

Alsten Chase has written a book about Yellowstone National Park. He is worried about the damage the fires can do to the park. He is also concerned(关心) about the park rules.

These rules say that nature should decide what happens to the park. Alsten also writes that the elk herd(马鹿群) has grown too big. The elks walk on the riverbanks. They eat the new grass and roots of baby trees. The beavers (河狸) need the trees to build dams.

The dams raise the water levels. Higher water levels put more water into the soil. Moist soil helps plants grow faster. The plants offer homes and food to other animals.

Chase thinks that the park rules would work only in a park with natural settings. He believes that Yellowstone has had an artificial setting for a long time. The native people left. The wolves were taken away and other animals were removed. The areas of land were fenced off and other animals added. He thinks the park rules that let herds grow too big and the fires burn are hurting the nature of the park.

Text 10

Good morning. I am Professor Armstrong, and I am your laboratory instructor. This class is intended as a necessary part of the course, which Dr Smith will be in charge of. This class will meet twice a week.  This laboratory begins at nine. I expect you to be on time. I do not intend to wait for the latecomers or repeat what has already been covered if you miss the explanation. And do not arrive late and interrupt your neighbour. You may as well not come if you can’t be on time.

Attendance  is equally important if you miss three lab classes, you’re dropped from the labs—no excuses. You can’t complete the course without completing the  lab.

Besides, safety is key here. It’s very important to keep things neat and clean, dress properly, and be careful. You may not eat, drink or smoke in the laboratory and you should always clean the counter and wash your hands both before and after the class. Long hair must be timed back. Large clothing must not be worn. Any laboratory accident must be reported immediately.

I hope you’ll enjoy the laboratory. It’s a wonderful pace, and all the requirements I’ve just mentioned are to be followed. We will begin  today by learning about the microscope.
