The annual New York Comic Convention (漫画大会) began at New York City’s Javits Center on Thursday, October 10, 2013 and ran until Sunday evening. About 130,000 people took part in the festival.

At the convention, salespeople sell toys, movie, posters, clothes, and comics. Visitors can go to the place where speakers talk about subjects related to popular culture. Fans can also meet their favorite comic artists at Artist Alley.

The convention may be popular. But sales of comic books have been decreasing (减少) for many years. So the comic-book industry has been working to develop new readers. In fact, many people think comics are a great way to get kids to read more.

The Stan Lee Foundation aims to improve kids’ ability to read and write. The foundation is named after Stan Lee, a famous writer who helped create superheroes like Spider-man and Incredible Hulk. His foundation had a booth (摊位) at the convention to promote (宣传) its special reading programs for kids.

“We go into elementary school libraries, and we bring in cosplayers (people who dress in costumes as characters)”, says Ryan Dawson, who works for the foundation. “We let the kids read the comic books while the cosplayers act them out.” Kids at these programs then get to take comics with them to read at home.

New York Comic Con attracts fans of all sorts of different movies, books, and video games. Lots of fans at the festival are even in costume as their favorite characters.

“I’ve been going for three years so far,” says Elissa, 16, who came to the convention with her family. She was dressed as Jade Harley, a character from the webcomic Homestuck. “I always have so much fun making costumes and then going to see all of the people who share a common interest come together and have fun together.”

During the daytime, many people are busy using their cell phones. They only have time to charge(充电) them at night when they are asleep. But scientists have warned that having a glowing phone in your bedroom at night could not only affect your sleep, it could also make you fat.

When darkness falls, our bodies begin to produce a hormone(荷尔蒙) called melatonin(褪黑素). It helps our metabolish(新陈代谢) so that our body can change food and drink into energy. When the sun rises, melatinin reduces. This light-dark cycle is good for our health.

But if people charge their phones when they are asleep, the phones release short-wavelength(短波长) blue light. Although it is not bright enough to light up a room, it can affect our sleep. Therefore, it slows down our metabolish and affects our body to digest food. This may cause obesity(肥胖).

“Blue light is bad for our health because it keeps the mind buzzing(嗡嗡声), ”Simon Kyle, a sleep scientist at Manchester University, told the Daily Mail.

And there is strong scientist data to show the connection between interference and people’s health.

Earlier this year, leading scientists from universities including Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard, warned that a lack of sleep could cause serious health problems, such as cancer, heart disease and obesity.

Kyle advised turning off smart phones and desktop computers a few hours before going to bed. This helps to reduce people’s exposure to artificial(人工的) light.

41.The author writes the text to _______.

A.Charging phones at night may make you fat. B.Not enough sleep can make us thin and healthy. C.Turning off computers can make us sleep easily. D.Artificial light is good for planting wild flowers. 45.What do we know about Simon Kyle? He is _______.

A.a sleep scientist at Manchester University B.a science student at Harvard University C.a founder of the British newspaper Daily Mail D.a famous professor at Oxford university

One Possible Version:

Nowadays, with the fierce competition in study, a lot of students suffer from great mental pressure. Due to it, the Students Union will hold a Psychological Health Week next week, the theme of which is “How to Relieve Mental Pressure”.

In the Psychological Health Week, there will be various kinds of activities. A lecture given by a psychological professor on how to deal with the pressure of study will provide us with professional psychological guidance. There will also be a drama which will show us an excellent performance. In addition, a debate on “Pressure, Good or Bad?” will be expected among the students.

I firmly believe the mental health is of great importance for everyone, especially us senior two students. Thus, the Psychological Health Week is really beneficial for us to relieve pressure and make it motivation for our harder study.
