Text 1

W: Are there any children in the classroom?

M: Yes, seven are reading at their desks and five are playing on the floor.

Text 2

W: How about going out for dinner? My treat this time!

M: Thanks, but I have an appointment with my dentist.

Text 3

W: Our telephone company will send a man at three this afternoon. Someone has to be at home.

M: OK. I’ll have to take time off from work. We can’t go any longer without a telephone.

Text 4

W: If the weather doesn’t get any better, we may have to cancel our plans for this afternoon’s picnic.

M: Don’t give up yet. The forecast said the clouds should clear up by next morning.

Text 5

M: I’m my boss at last. Nobody will tell me what I should do and what I shouldn’t.

W: Wow. You have your own company'?

M: Not really. I’ve just quit my job.

Text 6

W: I still think we should take our kids out with us.

M: Forget about them. Now, what would you like to eat?

W: Er…I’ve no idea. What do you like?

M: I’d 1ike some fried chicken. That’s my favorite.

W: Hmm, not mine. Is there any special food in this restaurant?

M: Let me see. Ah, it’s fried frogs!

W: What?

M: Fried flogs. That’s the local people’s favorite.

W: Their favorite? Do you enjoy eating frogs?

M: Not often, because it’s expensive.

W: Oh no. Frogs are useful animals. They are our friends. They shouldn’t be served on the table.

M: Don’t be silly. Their meat is very delicious.

W: How can you say that? You’ve made me sick. Bye.

Text 7

W: What do you do, Lee?

M: I’m a lawyer for an international company based here in Singapore.

W: Do you like your job?

M: Yes, I do. I deal with some very interesting cases, so I’m always learning something new. My colleagues here are very nice, we have modern new offices here at Raffles Place, and I’m paid quite well.

W: Are there any bad things?

M: Well, I work for long hours. I start working at 9 a. m. If something important comes up, I will stay in the office until eight or the evening. Because I work for an international company. I have to travel to other offices quite often, and I miss my family. I also wish I had more holidays. I’d even be willing to earn less money and have more holidays!

Text 8

W: What shall we do this weekend? How about going to Scotland?

M: Scotland? You’re mad. It may be a small country by some standards, but we can’t go all that way just for one weekend.

W: Oh, all right, it was a joke. But let’s get out of London. I need some fresh air.

M: I agree. I’ll have to shop on Saturday morning, but let’s not waste the afternoon. Where could we go?

W: I suggest we go to Hampstead.

M: Good idea. We can go by bus, can’t we? And there are some lovely old houses and little streets to look at, and…

W: And dress shops!

M: And there are dozens of cafes and restaurants in the village. After walking around, we shall both be hungry and thirsty.

Text 9

W: Hi, Jack. I’ve been looking for you. Do you think you could help me buy a car?

M: Sure. What kind of car do you want?

W: A NISSAN.

M: Can you pay for it?

W: Yes. I have enough money.

M: How much is enough?

W: The most I could spend is $2, 000.

M: You’ll never get a car for that. A used car is your hope.

W: A used car is OK, if everything works well.

M: I just heard about something you might want to know. My grandma lives next door to an old woman. She just mentioned that her eyesight was so bad that she had to give up her driver’s license. That means she can’t drive any more.

W: Is her car very good? How much do you think she wants?

M: It’s really very good, only 43, 000 miles on it and most of those came from her driving down New York each winter, but I don’t know the price yet.

survive the

40.选A。由后面的“She smiled, handed me the tissues and hugged me.”

42.【解析】选A。

B。smooth the path for sb.

I learned that where there is life, there is hope可以推出答案。

46.【解析】选A。在一名身残志坚的朋友面前,作者感觉到自己的渺小,因此用small,而不是weak(软弱的),pitiful(同情的),shameless(无耻的)。

47.【解析】选C。从上文提到的“my oldest son was hit by a car while riding his bike,   6   (causing) a terrible brain injury”可知这里作者指的是儿子在意外中受伤,用hurt,而其他的词性不符合语境。

Which would you give up: TV, cellphone or Web

We are now living in an information age, in which TV, cellphones and the Web are widely used. It seems that many people cannot enjoy themselves without them.

However, if I had to give up one of them, I would turn off the TV rather than switch off my cellphone or cut off the Internet. I could do without TV because few shows take my fancy and there’re too many commercials. Besides, most programms on TV are also available elsewhere.

As for cellphones and the Web, they are more necessary to me. I need a cellphone to keep in touch with my friends and family, and almost all information can be gathered on the Internet.
