Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.

For most of the time this “conversation” goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we become aware of it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between our expectations and meaning of the text. When successful matching is being experienced, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.

Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the pages; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for the advanced readers.

There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that has nothing to do with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a “process” conversation as opposed to “content” conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are advanced reader our ability to hold a content conversation with text is usually well developed but not so our ability to hold a process conversation. It is precisely this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.

There’s three hour-or-so slice of late afternoon that puzzles parents: the hours after school lets out and before the family gathers for dinner. What are kids supposed to do during this time, anyway?

As a society, we don’t seem to know. It’s not like the hours from 8 to 3, when the drill is known to all. Parents go to work, kids go to school. It’s not like the hours after 6 when a son of consensus(一致)reigns again. Parents ancbor the home and the kids do whatever the parents want them to do.

School ends at around 3. Work finished at around 5, and it can take parents up to an hour or more to get home. Love it or hate it, that’s they way it is. We have a gap between the lives of kids and parents, and there is no good way to connet them. It is as if the gap were some unexpected problem, and each family is responsible for finding its own solution, much the same as when someone gets sick.

The term “key kids” come from the image of young children carrying house keys around their needs or in their pockets. When school ends, they make their way home along and walk into an empty house. What they do after that is between them and the cat. The Christian Science Monitor says that crime peaks during the after-school hours. Also, according to a report from the National Safe Kids Campign, 4.5 million children are injured in their homes every year. Most of them are kids who are unsupervised after school.

Personally, I don’t need numbers . When I picture a child between the ages of 6 and 12 coming home alone, my mind instanily fills with terrible thoughts. This can’t be any parent’s preferred choice. There must be a better solution.

72.What is the writer’s main purpose for writing this article?

A.To criticize parents who don’t take care of their children.

B.To criticize schools for not taking care of kids.

C.To draw parents’ attention to the after-school problem.

D.To offer advice on how to solve the after-school problem.

73.What does the underlined word “unsupervised” in the fourth paragraph mean?

A.No one believes them. B.No one is charging them.

C.No one is expecting them. D.No one is watching them.

74.What will “key kids” usually do after they go home?

A.They will do everything their parents want then to do.

B.They may play with their pets alone at home.

C.They will stay at home with their parents.

D.They will do homework on their own.

75.What are most parents doing from around 5 to 6 in the afternoon?

A.Hurrying home. B.Busy with their work.

C.With their children. D.Preqaring supper.

“BANG! BANG” Setting off firecrackers(爆竹), which has been the most typical custom on the They light the fuse(导火线) nervously, run away in a hurry, cover their ears with their hands and watch the colorful display with a big smile on their faces. Faced with the beautiful scene, they feel they are the happiest ones in the world as if they had never had a more exciting experience.

While setting off firecrackers can bring kids so much fun, these firecrackers can also be dangerous. Therefore, many Chinese big cities including Beijing began to ban them in the 1980s. Such an activity was completely or partially forbidden in big cities because the government took security, noise and pollution factors into consideration. As a replacement, some buy tapes with firecracker sounds to listen to, some break little balloons to get the sound too, while others buy firecracker handicrafts to hang in the living room.

This year good news came for teens in Beij ing. The ban on firecrackers was cancelled on September 9, 2008. It will add much fun to the coming Spring Festival in tile capital. Hearing the news, many kids were wild with joy.

According to Chinese custom, lighting firecrackers is a must during the Spring Fesrival. People believe the sound of the firecrackers drives away demons(恶魔) and bad luck for the coming year. Their beautiful colours and sound also bring much excitement during this most important traditional Chinese festival.

Since the ban, people complained that the Spring Festival was too quiet and not traditional enough. Children lost the fun and grown-ups lost their childhood memories. Some even worried that if the ban continued, the next generation would only know the custom of lighting firecrackers through books. This would be a great loss for tradition.

Everybody knows that we can’t give up eating for the slight risk of choking(噎). So in recent years, many cities have resumed the old custom at the request of local residents. This year Beijing kids will also be able to join in.

However, every year there are kids injured by setting off fireworks in a dangerous way. So while enjoying yourself, please bear safety in mind.

Don’t light fireworks among crowds, inside a bottle or with a part of your body right over it.

No matter how much fun firecrackers are, the most important thing is to keep away from danger. We wish every kid an exciting and safe Spring Festival!
