听力材料

(Text 1)

M:Sorry,Lisa. I can’t go to the party with you tonight.

W:Haven’t you heard that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?

(Text 2)

M:I must say,Miss, the food was great and I’ve never had better service.

W:Well, thank you, sir. I’ll pass your praise on to the cook and the manager. And thanks too for the tip.

(Text 3)

M:Are you sure you’ve corrected all the mistakes in the paper?

W:Perhaps I’d better read it through again.

(Text 4)

W:Why not wait here a few minutes and I’ll get my car?

M:No,thank you. I’d better take the bus home.

(Text 5)

W:What do you think of the film?

M:I like it. I think it is great.

W:I like it too. Do you like the acting?

M:Yes. It is excellent. Do you?

W:Not really. It is quite disappointing.

(Text 6)

W:Why don’t we buy a car,dear?

M:I have been thinking about it for a long time. I think it necessary for us to buy one. We live so far away from my company.

W:Yes. With a car,you wouldn’t have to catch a bus to work. It can save a lot of time.

M:Sure, but we don’t have enough money at present.

W:Why not borrow some from the bank? I think we won’t have to borrow so much now.

M:Well, let’s go downtown and have a look.

(Text 7)

M:It’s so hard for me to learn English. Why is it so easy for you?

W:I didn’t know you were having problems. Maybe it’s easier for me because I already speak two languages. And,you should work hard at it.

M:Well,I always do my homework and go to classes. What else do you think would help?

W:Well, you might try reading newspapers. And I always talk to Americans when I get a chance, though sometimes it’s hard.

M:But,how do you meet Americans? I only know other foreign students.

W:How about sitting next to an American at lunch,or have you ever thought of asking someone over to your house for dinner?

M:Those are good ideas. But I’m a little shy to speak English.

W:You won’t learn if you don’t try and speak. If I were you,I’d talk to your English teacher. He might have some good ideas.

(Text 8)

M:Is it true that you don’t swim at all now?

W:I’m afraid so,I’m too old.

M:But you are only twenty.

W:That’s too old for a swimmer. If I swam in an international competition now,I wouldn’t win. So I’d rather not swim at all.

M:But don’t you enjoy swimming?

W:I used to,when I was small. But if you enter for big competitions you have to work very hard. I used to get up at 6 to go to the pool. I had to train before school, after school and on weekends. I swam thirty-five miles every week!

M:But you were so famous at fifteen. And look at all those cups.

W:It’s true that I did have some wonderful memories. The Olympics were very exciting. But I missed some important things, too. While other girls were playing,I was swimming.

Good morning and welcome to the BBC news special.

Have you ever heard of a four-year-old college student? But this is true of Nicholas MacMahon, who is now studying at college because he is too clever for school.

Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.

His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak,he corrected his spelling. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents decided that he couldn’t stay there. His parents did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads newspaper every day,and he can play the violin well. He doesn’t have any social life in the school. Nicholas is a clever child and the teac hers want to help him in every way.
