Ⅴ.阅读理解

(2011年山东省新泰市高二期末考试)The only light in the room came from all the monitors and machines that lined the wall behind his bed.I felt him climb onto my lap.He didn’t notice the tears falling down my face until he hugged me.Settling his eyes on mine he said,“Mommy, don’t cry.I will always love you! Jesus told me to tell you,you will see me again. He said the angels will take me to him,but before I could go I have to remind you,I love you.I will be waiting for you.I will never be sick again.”He got more excited as he spoke. His words came faster and his face shone.

“I have to get back in bed.I love you,Mommy.”He kissed my cheek and slid off my lap.Unable to move,I watched him climb back into bed and went back to sleep.

Monitors and alarms blared (响起) throughout the room.I awoke to medical staff hurrying around the room, around my son’s bed.Had I been dreaming? A member of the nursing staff stood beside me.She put her hand on my shoulder and explained to me that they were trying to save my son.

When the doctor turned,he said,“I’m sorry! We could do nothing more.”I stood there, tears starting flowing down my face.A nurse led me over to the bed.He lay there,so still and yet he looked so peaceful.I brushed the hair off his forehead and kissed his check. The nurse gently supported me toward the couch. It was then I saw it,a single long?stemmed white rose.I asked,“Where did this rose come from?”

She responded,“I thought you would know.It dropped from your lap when you stood up.”Confused, not remembering any roses in the room, much less one on my lap.I walked over, bent down and picked it up.As I breathed in the fragrance from its soft petals, the atmosphere in the room changed.I heard the rush of wings, the air smelled fresh and in the distance I heard the sound of church bells.

I know the fragrance and sight of a white rose will always hold a special meaning for me.

1.Why was the author’s son in hospital?

A.Because Jesus wanted to take his life away.

B.Because he was badly injured in an accident.

C.Because he came down with a serious illness.

D.Because the author worked there in the hospital.

解析:选C。根据第1小段小男孩所说的话中“I will never be sick again”可知,他是因病住院。

2.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.While the author was asleep, her son passed away.

B.The doctor tried his best to save the boy,but failed.

C.The author’s son died in bed peacefully and quietly.

D.It was the nurse who had put the rose on the author’s lap.

解析:选D。根据护士和作者的对话可知,护士也不知道这枝白玫瑰从何而来,故可推知不是她放的。故D项为正确答案。

3.What does the author mean by the last paragraph?

A.Her son once loved white roses best.

B.The white rose is her favourite flower.

C.She will think of her son at the sight of a white rose.

D.Her son will be waiting for her with a white rose in heaven.

解析:选C。因为没有人知道白玫瑰的来源,所以作者认为这是冥冥中儿子留给她的东西,所以每次见到白色玫瑰,作者都会睹物思人,想到她死去的儿子。

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Mommy,don’t cry!

B.A white rose

C.Come back,my son!

D.A poor mother

解析:选A。作者似乎想告诉读者,儿子临死前曾托梦给她,要她不要悲伤,因为他是被耶稣派来的天使带去了天堂。作为母亲,作者也因此感到释然。故A项更为贴切。
