Hen he had to go back home, he drove to the station with his luggage. There he asked a porter to put into the train. Then he got into the smoking car and sat down in one of the comfortable seats there. The car was empty when he got in , but a few minutes later, another man got in and sat down on the seats opposite his. Mark twain looked sat the man and thought that this man looked quite unpleasant. However, it would be impolite to say nothing in that situation, so he said good morning to the man and they begin to talk.

First they talked about the weather and then they talked about Maine. The stranger said, “We have some beautiful woods in Maine. It would be a pity to come to Marine without spending some time there. I suppose you have been in our woods, haven’t you?” “yes, I have,” answer Mark Twain. “I’ve just spent three weeks there and I had a very good time, too. And let me tell you something. Although fishing isn’t allowed in Maine in this season, I’ve got two hundred pounds of beautiful fish with my luggage in this train. I like to eat fish, so I packed it in ice to take it home with me. May I ask who you are, sir?”

The stranger looked at Mark Twain for several seconds and then answered, “I’m a police officer. My job is to catch people who hunt and fish during the wrong seasons. Alfred and Mary Walker and their son, Robert, live in England. They are visiting Hong Kong on Holiday. They will send postcards home. Now read what they are writing.

Dear Richard,

We arrived in Hong Kong three days ago. We are having a wonderful time, but every day is very busy. We get up early and go to bed late. It’s rather tiring.

Yesterday we took a bus to the Park. It was a very clear day. From the top, we saw the whole of Hong Kong. We took lots of photos. Some of them will be really good. I will buy a video camera for you because I know you want one. I'll get it tomorrow because we are going shopping.

Your brother,

Alfred

Dear Mum and Dad.

We are having a lovely time in Hong Kong. Two days ago, we went to a place called Ocean Park. We saw lots of sharks and dolphins there. Robert enjoyed it very much. Today we are going to Lantau Island. We will see the huge statue of Buddha there. Tomorrow we are going shopping on Hong Kong Island.

Hong Kong is very different to our hometown in England. The streets are more crowded and there is more traffic on the roads. It is noisier than at home as well, and everything is more expensive here!

See you soon.

Lots of love,

Mary

Hi Dan!

Hong Kong is a great city! There is so much to see and do here. We went to a great place called Ocean Park. I saw lots of tropical fish and some sharks. I also went on a roller-coaster and a cable car.

I loved the roller-coaster and I went on it four times! Mum and Dad thought I was lost, but then they saw me at the top of the roller-coaster.

Tomorrow will be a shopping day, the worst part of the holiday!

See you soon!

Your friend,

Robert

"The dishes smell so good!" cried Mike. "Are most of the parents here yet? I'm so hungry."

Kent looked through the door which led into the hallway. "I think Mr. Milano and Mr. Hasselbach just finished giving them the garden tour. They should be coming here in a moment."

The students of Jefferson Middle School had spent all afternoon preparing for the evening meal. They did their best to change the lunchroom into a beautiful dining area for their families. The grey metal tables were hidden under brightly-colored cotton tablecloths. Each table held a small glass vase with fresh flowers from the school's garden.

Only about half of the overhead lights were on. The children thought that candles would do an excellent job of creating a nice environment, but Mr. Milano said that candles were too dangerous to use in a school.

As the families found their seats, Mr. Milano called Drew, Emilio, and Mike to join her at the front of the room. "Could I have everyone's attention?" asked Mr. Milano. "I just want to take a moment to congratulate Drew, Emilio, and Mike for their wonderful idea."

Mr.Milano continued, "A year ago, they first came to me with the plan for starting a garden at Jefferson. They had thought through everything. Anytime I had a question about how we would make the plan work, they had an answer prepared. As you can see, they were correct. About three quarters of the food you'll be enjoying tonight came from the school garden. The students prepared the whole meal themselves."

Mr.Milano handed Drew, Emilio, and Mike each a box. They opened their boxes as Mr. Milano said, "As a thank-you to these students for their creative idea and hard work, they have each received a stepping-stone from the garden. Their names and the date are engraved on the stones."

B. Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): (7分)

It's not easy being a teenager— nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. If your teen has you puzzled and upset, or even refuses to talk to you. the following offers a practical approach to giving your child the space he needs to grow while gently making him know that you'll be still there for him when he needs you.

Offer your help always, but your advice only when asked. If your child is unwilling to discuss a particular topic, don't force him to tell you what's in his mind. Let him attempt to solve things by himself — a sure sign to him that you support his growing independence and the greatest way for him to build self-respect.

Don't invade your teenager's space. Show the same respect for his privacy (隐私)that you would show for any adult relatives. Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations. And do avoid going into his room to tidy up when he's not at home. Remember a teenager is old enough to maintain his own room.

Mirror only positive (积极的) feelings about physical appearance. Most teenagers are oversensitive about how they look. Although they may be highly critical (批评的) about the way others look or dress, they are often unable to handle such criticism directed toward them. Self-image is very important to teenagers, so keep a cool head about fashions your teen chooses to wear. You should look for ways to support and strengthen any positive comments your child makes about himself.

It may seem like a simple step, but talking to your teen about the risks of drugs (毒品) may help keep your teen drug-free. In fact, teens who learn about the dangers of drugs from their parents are less likely to (可能) try drugs than those who learn nothing at home.

Try to open up the lines of communication with your teen.

80. Which of the following can properly show the respect for your teen's privacy?

When an animal helps another animal,it usually gets something valueable(有价值的)in return. For a long time, many scientists thought that only people could act generously just because it feels good.

However,a new study in Germany suggests that chimpanzees (an animal like a large monkey without a tail ) also do good things for no real reason. And so do children who are as young as 18 months of age. Maybe it is because humans an chimpanzees share an ancestor about 6million years ago.

People and chimpanzees appear to develop such features without any other training, says Warneken,a scientist in Germany.

Warneken and his partners worked on adult chimpanzees that live on an island in the Afican country of Uganda. They also worked with 18-month-old children in Germany. The researchers performed three experiments on the adult chimpanzees and two experiments on the kids. In the first animal experiment,a person tried to reach his arm into a cage to get a stick, but he couldn’t reach it. A chimpanzee was in the cage, and it could reach the stick if it wanted to.

Thirty-six chimpanzees took part in this experiment one by one,and no chimpanzee saw what the other chimpanzees had done. Even though the animals hadn’t met the person before, they usually took the stick and gave it to the person. What’s more, they did this whether or not the person offered them bananas as a reward.

In a similar experiment,36 children acted in a similar way. They helped the person reach the stick, whether or not they were offered toys for their help.

Researchers did other experiments on chimpanzees and babies. No rewards were offered in either experiment. And still, both the chimpanzees and children went out of their way to help. Still, the new study is different from earlier findings. Researchers have found that chimpanzees don’t give rewards of food to other chimpanzees, even if it costs them nothing to be generous.

Copenhagen, one of the world's most bicycle-friendly cities, has begun to turn its network of usual highways (公路) into bike highways in order to push more commuters (每日往返上班着) to leave their cars at home.

Copenhagen and Amsterdam are called Europe's two "bicycle capitals", Copenhagen counts more bicycles than people and cycling is so popular that its numerous bike paths (道) can become very crowded.

Traffic jams caused by bikes are usually common on the main Noerrebrogade (诺勒布洛加德街) street used by around 36,000 cyclists a day. "Copenhagen's roads are packed with people who want to ride their bicycles in all kinds of weather. You have to be careful cycling your way forward and some cyclists aren't always thoughtful," complains 22-year-old university student Lea Bresell. "The creation of bike highways comes right on time," he adds.

If in the 1960s Danes (丹麦人) thought of the car as a sign of freedom, today the bicycle has taken its place. Bicycle has become an important part of people's life, even politicians ride bikes to work.

It is on crowded Noerrebrogade the busiest bicycle street in Europe, the city planners have decided to build the first Copenhagen's environmentally friendly street. The jammed bike paths will be widened to four meters on either side of the road.

"The idea is to make Noerrebrogade Europe's great cycling street", says Andreas Rochl the Copenhagen bicycle program manager who is also known as "Mr. Bike". But Rochl is not satisfied with making life easier for cyclists in the city. He wants to get people living in the countryside out of their cars and onto bikes too.

His goal is to push the percentage of countryside commuters cycling to and from the city from today's 37 percent to more than 50 percent by 2015- Within the city, 55 percent of commuters already travel by bike.

Already Copenhagen's cycling environment is better than other European capitals with its bike paths of more than 390 kilometers.

E. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题): (14 分)

Once upon a time there lived a farmer. He earned money by selling the products from his farm. He gave all his money to the poor people. So, the whole village respected him. But he had a big problem in his farm. Whenever he spread seeds (种子) in his farm, the crows (乌鸦) would come and eat them up. He was worried about this trouble as he got less money from his farm.

"I must do something about the crows. I will be in deep trouble if I do not stop these crows," he thought. He complained about this problem to his friends. They gave him an idea to get rid of the crows. "Go to the town and buy a large net. Trap (设陷并捕获) the crows in the net with some grains (谷粒)."

So the next day. the farmer bought a net and some grains. He placed the net on the farm and spread the grain over it Then he went and hid himself.

Soon the crows came to the fields to pick the grains. They were there. "More grains! That farmer is indeed a foot he does not seem to learn," said the crows to each other. And they laughed among themselves. But suddenly they found that they were trapped. Then, the farmer was standing over the crows. "Aha! Finally. I have got you all. For the loss you have caused me, I will put you all to death."

Suddenly the farmer heard a weak voice among the noises of the crows. There was a pigeon (鸽子) among the crows. Both the pigeon and the bad crows were in the net The pigeon said, "Mr. Farmer, please let me go. You are angry with the crows, not with me."

The farmer said. "But you too have been caught stealing from my farm. I will not let you go," said the farmer. The pigeon had to pay a heavy price for being in the wrong group.
