This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.

It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend(超越) it. Once we truly know that life is difficult---once we truly understand and accept it---then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.

Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties mean a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, those things that hurt, instruct. It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

41. From the passage, it can be inferred that ______.

A. everybody has problems

B. we become stronger by meeting and solving the problems of life

C. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain

D. people like to complain about their problems

A. save space B. persuade readers

C. make readers laugh D. get readers’ attention

43. The saying from Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt, instruct” suggests that ______.

A. we do not learn from experience

B. we do not learn when we are in pain

C. pain teaches us important lessons

D. pain cannot be avoided

This coming year promises to be an exciting one for technology and science. There is already a line-up of great new gadget(小玩意). We have chosen four for you.

No. 1 The Air Board 1.0 is a fantastic new way to get around. If you are tired of walking, or just want to get somewhere at a relaxed pace, then the Air Board 1.0 is for you. The board works when you step onto the pressure pads. These can read the weight and the movement of the rider. If you want to turn, all you have to do is move your weight to the left or right and the board will do the rest. It is very quick and easy. According to the official website, the power will last for about ten miles(16 km). It can travel at the speed of 10 miles an hour and it takes one hour to be fully charged.

No. 2 Do you enjoy using herbs and spices(香料) when cooking? Then this little gadget, inspired by NASA space technology, might be for you. It makes sure that you always have fresh and well-grown herbs or plants when and where you need them. The Click & Grow is designed to be small and efficient so it can fit on your countertop(厨房操作台). It is self-watering, it checks itself and it also has a LED grown light that makes sure the plants grow fast, strong, and healthy. For those interested, to use this gadget, all you need to do is place the plant box in, fill it up with water and plug it in. Simple, right? So instead of digging through the garden mud for your herbs, why don’t you make them in the control of your own kitchen?

No. 3 The Miito gadget is perfect for all homes, and especially those who like to care for the environment. Miito has been called “the kettle of the future” by the Gadget Flow platform for its futuristic ideas and design. The Miito kettle is designed to heat up the water in any container. For example, if you need a cup of water, you would fill the cup with the right amount of water and place it onto the kettle. After placing the rod into the water, the rod would heat up and so would the water. Though it can’t heat anything made of iron, the Miito’s design and unique method of heating don’t only save water. They also save electricity.

No. 4 Have you ever wished you could walk through the worlds of your games, seeing things as your characters would? Well now, you can. The Rift released by Oculus VR is the latest and greatest in gaming technology so far. Designed by American Palmer Luckey, 23, this clever head set allows you to see the worlds of your games in 3-D. Although you might need to upgrade your computer to get the full gaming experience with the Rift, it’s the next step in virtual reality and it’s improving the way we can play games. It had been a difficult move. I'd left my family and friends in Indiana, the beloved state where I'd lived most of my life. My new home in Florida was thousands of miles away from anything I knew. It was hot— all the time. Jobs were hard to come by, but I was up for almost any challenge.

At last, I taught in a special school where students have severe learning and behavioral difficulties. Another teacher and I had spent weeks teaching the children appropriate behavior for public outings. Unexpectedly, only a few students, including Kyle, had not earned the privilege of going. He was determined to make his disappointment known.

In the corridor(走廊) between classrooms, he began screaming, cursing, spitting, and swinging at anything within striking distance. Once his outburst died down, he did what he'd done when he was angry at all his other schools, at home, even once at a juvenile detention(拘留) center. He ran. People watched in disbelief as Kyle dashed straight into the heavy morning traffic in front of the school.I heard someone shout, "Call the police!" But I ran after him.

Kyle was at least a foot taller than me. And he was fast. His older brothers were track stars at the nearby high school. But I could run long distances without tiring. I would at least be able to keep him in my sight and know he was alive.

After several blocks of running directly into oncoming traffic, Kyle slowed his pace.

He took a sharp left. Standing next to a trash bin, Kyle bent over with his hands on his knees. I must have looked ridiculous. But his was not a look of fear. I saw his body relax. He did not attempt to run again. Kyle stood still and watched me approach. I had no idea what I was going to say or do, but I kept walking closer.

He opened his mouth to speak when a police car pulled up, suddenly filling the space between Kyle and me. The school headmaster and an officer got out. They spoke calmly to Kyle, who willingly climbed into the back of the vehicle. I couldn't hear what was said, but I didn't take my eyes off Kyle's face, even as they drove away.

I couldn't help but feel that I had failed him, that I should have done or said more, that I should have fixed the situation.

I shared my feelings with a speech therapist who was familiar with Kyle's history. "No one ever ran after him before, Rachel, "she said. "No one. They just let him go."

Things changed the day he ran and I ran after him, even though I didn't have the right words, even though I wasn't able to save him from the mess he was in. It was the day I didn't throw my hands in the air and decide he was too fast, a waste of time and effort, a lost cause. It was the day my mere presence was enough to make a profound difference.

A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington D.C. I saw many of our nation’s treasures, and I also saw a lot of unfortunate people like beggars and homeless folks in the streets. Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended(伸出). In a natural reaction, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it in her hand. I didn’t even look at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.”

Immediately, I realized what I had done. I acted with prejudice(偏见)—I judged another person simply for what I thought she was.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in America at the age of 15. Through the years, I have been a dishwasher, cashier, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other jobs, and finally I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice. I remember a time, at age 17— I was a busboy, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well at school, he would end up like me.

But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the street of Washington D.C. cured me of my blindness. She reminded me to always keep my eyes and heart open.

51. When the author came to America at first ______.

A. he usually did some work with a little payment.

B. he used to beg for some money on the street.

C. he lived a comfortable life as a network engineer.

D. he was respected by others all the time.

52. According to the passage, what did the author regret?

A. That he gave all his change to the blind woman.

B. The way he treated the blind woman.

C. That he came to Washington D.C. for a visit.

D. That he didn’t tell the woman the way to the post office.

53. The father mentioned in the passage wanted ______.

A. to encourage his son to make a living by himself

B. his son to become a busboy in the future

C. his son to work harder at school

D. to remind his son to depend on himself at school

54. We can infer all of the following statements from the passage EXCEPT ______.

A. He disliked being bothered by beggars.

B. He was delighted to give away his money to beggars.

C. He once suffered a lot.

D. The blind woman didn’t beg for money at that time.

55. What does the author want to tell us through this story?

A. Don’t dream up ways to get what you want.

B. Money is the root of all evils.

C. An easy life makes a person forgetful. D. Be good to others all the time.
