We always say that an accident will bring an improvement to China. Last year, a large amount of traffic accidents concerning school buses happened, which had drawn the attention of media and public. After that, the authority has begun the preparation of new standards to the school buses.

In the process of the school bus's developing, China learns a lot from the US. There are some reasons, first of all, the United States is the most advanced country in terms of school buses, and it has a long history of school buses and a lot of great related products. Secondly, there is a famous photograph on the Internet which was an accident between an American school bus and a Hummer. The Hummer was badly damaged but the school bus was all right.

Now, everybody in China admires the American school buses and dislikes our own school buses, but I think we need to know the fact that there is a considerable difference between Chinese school buses and American ones.  The school buses in China are not like those in the United States which are directly based on ready-made truck chassis (底盘), instead, they use light buses as models.

Does "school bus safety" totally depend on the school buses' quality? We should find the real reasons of the accidents rather than try to find the shortcomings of the school buses, which are the drivers and traffic system. If those vehicles were not overloaded, not overspeed, if those drivers had driven safely and maintained the school buses well, how could those sad stories happen?

Today, China has been exporting a large number of buses to Asia and Europe even the US. In the wealthy Middle East, you can see Chinese buses everywhere. Not only because they are reasonably priced, but also the new technology, safety of Chinese buses. So naturally, we are extremely proud of the "Made in China" on the buses.

As I mentioned above, strict, effective laws and regulations along with regular supervision make the American school buses so safe and reliable.  And these reasons indicate that our government ought to improve the whole system step by step instead of rushing to some achievements.

44. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?

A. The photograph on the Internet.

B. The long history of the school buses.

C. The development of the school buses.

D. The reasons why China learns from the US.

45. The author strongly believes that the causes of the accidents concerning school buses are __________.

A. the quality of school buses

B. the drivers and traffic system

C. ineffective laws and regulations

D. the government's poor management

46. In paragraph 5 the purpose of the author is to ___________.

A. promote Chinese buses

B. find the reasons for the accidents

Courage is the ability to be brave in various situations in our life.  Here and there, now and then, everyone needs courage to do something well. Courage may make you confident of your success. If you have courage, you will not show fear in face of anything difficult or dangerous. With courage, you may look someone in the eye who you have wronged (冤枉) and say "I am sorry" ; you may still smile even if you are seriously ill and know you are at the end of your life.

How can we build up our courage?

Believe you will be successful. Take chances and know that you have your own talents. Besides, your family and friends are always there for you.

Exercise your courage. It can be compared to a muscle. The more we use it, the stronger courage gets.

Know that giving up is not a choice. It's much easier to give up, and it takes courage to say or do what you think is right, even when other people think you are wrong.

Fight to control your fear. Courageous people may still be afraid, but the difference is that they can control their fear.  They don't let it hold them back but use it as a reminder of what they can lose if they don't go on.

Get courage by reading inspiring stories of brave people. Abraham Lincoln is one of the people who you may think of.

1. What is courage? (no more than 13 words)

2. What will people do in face of difficulty or danger if they don't have courage? (no more than 5 words )

Ⅲ. 阅读理解(共4小题;每小题2分,满分8分)

阅读下面短文,从各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。

On college campuses across the country, students and faculty alike ask Michael Horn, "Will higher education be OK?"

Knowing that the analyst graduated from Yale University, people wonder, "Don't you want your twin daughters to go to Yale?" or will Horn want his girls in the Ivy League?

To the first question, he says, "Yes, but it's not going to look the same." And in answer to the second, he says, "Not necessarily."

"It's hard to imagine that my daughters will be making the same decisions I did... by looking only at four-year, traditional colleges," he adds." There will be so many other choices!"

Richard Vedder, economics professor at Ohio University, has a similar take on higher education's straits." More colleges, while generally slow to change, are showing" more willingness to innovate" in order to meet those challenges." he says.

Vedder points to recent developments, such as "blended education", combining online learning with time in a classroom," colleges starting to rethink professors' lifelong titles", and universities" moving campuses" He says higher education may be discovering Plato's prescription: "Necessity is the mother of invention." And companies like Google will offer internships leading to certificates or degrees, as well as jobs, at a much lower price than colleges charge for a four-year degree.

The difference, says Michael McLendon, academic dean and a professor at Southern Methodist University, is that colleges will have to shift their focus from where it has been for decades- on a "competition between institutions based on resource inputs, such as endowments, stadiums and so on, to a competition based on outcomes," such as graduation rates and future employment.

Ken Hartman, senior fellow at an education consulting firm, says he has seen more change in higher education during the last 24 months than at any other period during his career of more than 30 years in the field.

Online education, most agree, will be a key part of higher education's future. With lower costs and flexible scheduling, digital technology could help draw Hispanics, who will be responsible for 60 percent of the nation's population growth between now and 2050.

Also, degrees that can be obtained in less time, and based at least in part on competency, and not only on class credits, will likely be more common. And the author still thinks that "anyone who tells you they can say exactly what it will look like is lying."

1. What does Michael Horn expect for his daughters' future education?

A. He wants his girls to go to Yale as he did.   B. He doesn't want his girls to go to Yale.

C. His girls must go to one of the Ivy League.  D. Yale is not the only choice for his girls.

2. According to Richard Vedder, what might be the change in the future higher education?

A. More and more professors are employed for lifelong time.

B. All students have to do their interns at Google companies.

C. Online courses will be offered for gaining degree credits.

D. Studying Plato's works is necessary for a college degree.

3. What does the underlined word "shift" mean?

A. put          B. change        C. remove      D. keep

4. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Professors are sure about what the college of tomorrow will be like.

B. Hispanics will benefit from the change of higher education of tomorrow.

C. All the students have to spend more time and money on their degrees.

D. There has been no change in higher education in the past two years.
