高三英语练习:第三单元同高考模拟测试阅读理解二

Born on October 28, 1967 in Georgia, U.S.A, Julia Roberts grew up hanging around the theatre and watching her parents working. She made her film first public appearance playing a supporting role opposite her brother, Eric Roberts, in Blood in 1986. But her first real break came from the made - for - cable drama Satisfaction (1988), which led to a large supporting role in Mystic Pizza (1989). Julia Roberts’ role of a strong- headed pizza shop waitress who seduces a wealthy man earned her praise and led to her role in 1989’ s Steel Magnolias. As the poor Shelby, Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for her performance.

In order to branch off into more serious waters, Julia Roberts played a medical student who starts experimenting with life-after-death experiences in Flatliners (1990). Later in 1990, she stared in the sentimental romantic comedy Pretty Woman. The film was international hit and Roberts became a household name. But her later films, particularly Dying Young (1991), were of a decidedly uneven quality. After shooting her scenes as Tinker Bell in Steven Spielberg s Hook (1991), Roberts took some time off to repair her personal life.

In 1993, Julia Roberts married country singer Lyle Lovett and then made a successful come-back in The Pelican Brief (1993). But her next two movies in the following year, Pre-a-Porter and I love Trouble proved to be critical and commercial disappointments. Roberts’ bad luck continued when her much-anticipated Mary Reilly (1996) failed at the box office. But her career began to pick up again with Michael Collins and Conspiracy Theory (both 1996). In 1997, Roberts made a successful return in comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding and continued her quick rise in 1999 with Noting Hill and Run-away Bride. Both films helped to further restore Roberts to her status as the most shining woman in Hollywood. Her biggest success comes from Erin Brockovich. For the excellent performance she made in it, Julia Roberts was given the Oscar for Best Leading Actress Award on March 25, 2001.
