三、阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

Over the last three years, a lot of used book stores have cropped up in Bangkok. When I first moved to Thailand, it was much more difficult to buy second-hand books but now it’s easy. There are many used book shops in Bangkok. If you like to read and don’t want to spend money on new books, why not check out these Bangkok second-hand bookstores?

Chatuchak Market—Chatuchak Market is a great place to buy second-hand books, as well as coffee table books, art and design books, books on architecture and travel books. Prices start as low as $1.30, and you can bargain, especially if you buy several books.

Dasa Book Café—Dasa Book Café is one of my favorite book shops. Not only does it have a great selection of used books but the atmosphere at Dasa Book Cafe is lovely too. It has around 12,000 books, with some books from Germany, France, Italy etc. Dasa is also very well organized, unlike a lot of used book stores in Bangkok, so it’s very easy to find what you want. It also buys or exchanges books from customers, so if you’ve got books you no longer want, take them with you.

Elite Book House—Elite Book House is one of the other popular used book stores in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok. Its selection is average but the prices are good and it’s been around for over 20 years. Elite has many fiction books, travel books, and an interesting collection of history and biographies. The only thing I don’t like about Elite Book House is their staff have always been unfriendly, which is unusual for Thailand.

Angel Tomorrow—More like a warehouse-type(仓储式的) of shop than a straight used book store, it’s a bit disorganized. It is only open on weekends, but the prices are a little high and with around 40,000 second-hand books in stock, you’ll find all kinds of unusual books here. It has an excellent selection of children’s books, fiction, business, text books and more. Nice staff too.

39. Angel Tomorrow is different from other used book stores because                    .

A. it is well organize  B. it’s closed during weekdays

C. it sells new books as well D. the saleswomen in it are unfriendly

40. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The author moved to Thailand about one year ago.

B. It is easy for customers to find what they want if the used book store is well organized.

C. You can sell your books in Elite Book House.

With S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders coming out in 1967, a new kind of literature, young adult literature, appeared. Previous to this time, society generally recognized two age groups, school age children and adults, and books and magazines were for the needs and interests of each. However, after the Second World War, a newly recognized life stage called adolescence came into being, composed of high school and college students who had outgrown (太大而不适于) the books of children, but were not quite ready for the more lengthy and complex books of their parents and teachers.

The new young adult literature is written especially for them. Authors write works on a reading level and a maturity level suitable for young adult readers. Readers enjoy characters that are just like them. The American Library Association recognizes the value of these well-written works in encouraging students to read, and increasing their understanding and critical thinking skills along with a love of literature.

Teen Reads is designed to meet the needs of students who meet young adult literature for perhaps the first time, whether it is for a school assignment or just for more information about a favorite book and its author.

After an introductory chapter providing an overview of the author and his or her approach to writing, a biography chapter will detail the history of the author’s life and the experiences that had an impact on his or her works, the author’s writing process and future goals. The chapters that follow will concentrate on one novel or short story collection each. They will talk about the plot, main characters, setting, and themes of the story. At the end of each chapter will be web resources for additional reading. Teen Reads, written in a friendly style, will help students achieve a greater understanding and appreciation of the young adult novels they read.

Robert Burns, the son of a hard-working and intelligent farmer, was the oldest of seven children. Although always hard pressed financially, their father encouraged his sons with their education. As a result, Burns not only read the Scottish poetry of Ramsay and the collections by Hailes and Herd, but also the works of Pope, Locke, and Shakespeare.

By 1781, Burns had tried his hand at several agricultural jobs without success. Although he had begun writing, and his poems were spread widely in manuscript (手稿), none were published until 1786, when Burns published Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (1786), which was an immediate success. Later Burns brought out a second edition of his poems at Edinburgh in 1787, and for two winters he was socially active in the Scottish city. In 1788 he retired to a farm at Ellis land. By 1791 Burns had failed as a farmer, and he moved to Dumfries, where he held a position as a tax collector. He died of illness at 37.

Burns’s art is at its best in songs such as My Heart’s in the Highlands. Some of his songs, such as Auld Lang Syne and Comin’ thro’ the Rye, are among the most familiar and best-loved songs in the English language. But his talent was not limited to songs; two descriptive pieces, Tam o’ Shanter and The Jolly Beggars, are among his masterpieces.

Burns had a fine sense of humor, which was reflected in his satirical (讽刺的), descriptive, and playful poems. His great popularity with the Scots lay in his ability to describe the life of his fellow rural Scots. His use of dialect brought an energetic, much-needed freshness into English poetry.

Word of mouth advertising is something that you can get a lot by treating your customers with respect and by giving them great service, they will start talking. It is one of the quickest ways to gain new customers. And it has been tested and re-tested for a very long time. Word of mouth will allow you to make sure that you have what it takes for advertising, because it is the most natural way for people to talk about you and for people to figure out what you are all about. Word of mouth advertising happens when someone says something good about you, or passes on a story about you, to someone else. This is free advertising, and you are benefiting from it.

Make sure that you are doing something that makes you different from your competitors; this is a key factor. If you can be creative with a new idea, you’ll be the one that everyone is talking about. You can offer them incentives(激励) for talking about your business, and you can offer them small prizes for doing so. Mostly, things like this are great ways to make sure that people are speaking highly of your company.

Remember you can get a negative reputation as well, and if that happens, the word of mouth advertising that is done can actually harm you. Are you a tea lover? Do you like green tea or black tea? Well, a few cups of green tea each day may help you prevent heart disease, Greek researchers said. A new study shows health benefits from drinking green tea which can reduce the risk of cancers and other diseases. The study shows that green tea can improve the flow of blood and the ability of arteries (动脉) to relax, said Charalambos Vlachopoulos, an expert at the Athens Medical School in Greece who worked on the study.

Other studies have shown black tea can also benefit heart health. The Greek team said they believed green tea might be even better because it had higher quantities of flavonoid (类黄酮) — some of which are lost in the making of black tea. Flavonoids are also found in cocoa, tomatoes and grapes.

“This is the first study to show these effects of green tea,” Vlachopoulos said. “A couple of cups a day will probably help people to keep healthy.”

The researchers gave 14 healthy volunteers green tea, coffee or hot water on three situations and then measured the effects of endothelial cells (内皮细胞) in the circulatory system. These cells help relax arteries and improve the flow of blood. “What is important is that these effects are obvious quickly, within 30 minutes,” Vlachopoulos said. But the results showed an almost immediate benefit among people who ______________________, he said.

While the researchers only looked at a short-term effect, Vlachopoulos said the team’s not-yet-published studies suggested the protection was long-lasting. Green tea should be drunk more than black tea, for it can improve the flow of blood and be more beneficial to health.
