People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that can be cured. I prefer to think of

it as an emotional disability. It’s something we are born with and something we carry with us in our

entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some way of

doing away with their shyness. In my opinion, it’s a waste of time. I don’t mean that we should do

nothing about it;quite the contrary, I think we need to separate the basic fact of our shyness from our ability to take

part in a social environment.

Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy,

yet for decades he made a living talking and associating with different people every night, in front of

a national audience. Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a

way to deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend among talk

show hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is

a woman who has appeared in many films, TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was

so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of

meeting her.

I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感) and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open

personality do. As we grow up and become adults, we allow our social skills to grow and develop.

But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness

took root in our soul.

Agriculture made it possible for mankind to settle in lasting communities. After farming was

developed, people living in family units did not have to be on the move continually searching for food

or hunting their animals. Once people could control the production of food, their lives changed

completely.

Farming was a revolutionary discovery.

It not only made settlements possible and later the building

of cities but it also made available a reliable food supply. With more food available, more people

could be fed. Population therefore increased. The growing number of people available for more

kinds of work led to the development of new social formations. With more and more food, a

community could support a variety of workers who were not farmers.

All of the ancient civilizations probably developed in much the same way, in spite of a few

differences. As villages grew, the production of more numerous goods became possible. Cloth could

be made of wool. Houses made of wood, brick, and stone could be put up.

The science of mathematics was an early outgrowth of agriculture. People studies the movements of

the moon, the sun and the planets to work out seasons. By doing so they created the first calendars.

With a calendar it was possible to find ut the arrival of each growing season. Measurement of land

areas was necessary if field was to be divided accurately. Measurements of amount of seeds or

grains were also a factor. Later measure of value as money exchange became common.

All of the major ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China appeared in

the 4th millennium BC. Historians still argue over which one came into being first. It may well have

been the Middle East. This place reaches out from the Nile River in Egypt northward along the coast

of former Palestine, then eastward into Asia to include Mesopotamia. In this area people settled along

the riverbanks and practiced firld agriculture. This kind of farming depended on the reproduction of

seed, normally from grain crops.

Reebok executives do not like to hear their stylish athletic shoes called“footwear for yuppies”. They

say that Reebok shoes appeal to different age-groups, eapecially now that the company offers basketball and children’s shoes for the under-18 set and walking shoes for older customers not interested in aerobics or running. The executives

also point out that they have added hiking boots, dress and casual shoes, and high performance

athletic footwear to product lines, all of which should attract new and varied groups of customers.

Still, in spite of its emphasis on new markets, Reebok plans few changes in the upmarket retailing(零售) network that helped push sales to $1 billion annually, ahead of all continue to be sold only in

better speciality(专门店), sporting goods, and department stores, for the company’s view is that consumers judge the

quality of the brand by the quality of its distribution.

In the past few years, the Massachusetts-based company has limited the number of its distributors(分销商)(and the number of shoes supplied to stores), partly out of necessity. At times the unexpected

demand fo Reebok exceeded supply, and the company could hardly keep up with orders from the

dealers it already had. These fulfillment problems seem to be under control now, but the company is s

till selective about its distributors. At present, Reebok shoes are available in about five thousand retail

stores in the United States.

Reebok has already expected that walking shoes will be the next fitness-related fashion, replacing aerobic shoes the same way its brightly colored, soft leather exercise

footwear replaced conventional running shoes. Through product variety and careful market research,

Reebok hopes to avoid the distribution problems Nike came across several years ago, when Nike

misjudged the strength of the aerobics shoe fashion and was forced to get rid of huge stock of

running shoes through discount stores.

72.One reason why Reebok’s executives don’t like their shoes to be called“footwear for yuppies”is

that ____.

A.they believe that their shoes are popular with people of different age groups

B.new production lines have added to produce inexpensive shoes

C.“yuppies”usually makes you have a negative image

D.the term makes people think of high prices

73.The underlinded sentence in paragraph 2 implies that ____.

A.the quality of a brand is measured by the service quality of the store selling it

B.the quality of a product determined by the stores that sell it

C.the popularity of a brand is determined by the stores that sell it

D.consumers believe that first-rate products are only sold by high-quality stores

74.Althrough the Reebok Company has solved the problem of fulfilling the orders, it ____.

A.does not want to further expand its retailing network

B.still limits the number of shoes supplied to stores

C.is still particular about who sells its products

D.still carefully chooses the manufacurers of its products

75.What lesson has Reebok learned from Nike’s distribution problem?

A.A company should not sell its high quality shoes in discount stores.

B.A company should not limit its distribution network
