Looking for Canadian culture? Try checking out the ice rink."We love hockey," says Marion Alexander, a Canadian English teacher in Beijing."It really is Canada's sport.

There is no other sport so close to the hearts of Canadians and no other sport in which Canadians have been so successful. But how much do you know about hockey?

Hockey is played on a court of ice called a rink. Each team has six players —a goalie (goal keeper) , a center, two defensemen, and two forwards. All of them wear ice skates.

Instead of a ball, hockey uses a puck, a small black object made of rubber. Each team tries their best to hit the puck with their hockey sticks into the other team' s goal.Whichever team scores the most goals at the end of three periods is the winner.

"Hockey has a lot of rules," says Alexander, "but once you are used to it, it seems very natural." In Canada, hockey is part of the national identity. Many Canadians play youth hockey when they are growing up, and many Canadian families make a tradition of watching the games.

" I played goalie when I was younger," remembers Alexander." My family would always watch the Calgary Flames (a team in the National Hockey League) play on TV."

Hockey doesn't just unite families. It also brings the whole country together, especialg during the Olympics. " Canada is a diverse country that doesn't have a strong unified culture like China. That is why hockey is so important.Supporting the national team brings all of Canada together " says Alexander.

Cool snowflakes

You have seen snow, but have you ever studied a snowflake? Have you looked hard at falling snowflake and seen its design up close?

It' s not easy to look at something so tiny. The flake often melts or blows away as soon t it lands. If looking at one seems difficult, imagine trying to photograph one.

But that' s what Ken Libbrecht has spent much of the past four years doing: catching snowflakes, putting them under a microscope and taking pictures of them.

Libbrecht is an American scientist who has written four books about snowflakes.Four of his snow photos will be put on US postage stamps this holiday season.

It' s the structure

In his latest book "Ken Libbrecht' s Field Guide to Snowflakes" , he answers lots of questions about snowflakes in a way that' s easy to understand.

The beautiful structure of snowflakes is mainly the result of two things: conditions in the sky and the structure of water molecules (分子) .

A snowflake starts as a very small spot of dust.Water molecules in the air get attached to the dust, then freeze. These molecules are triangular. When enough of them become attached, a six-sided shape is formed.

Some snowflakes become flat and stay that way.Sometimes more water molecules freeze at the six corners and make the snowflake look like flowers.Other snowflakes turn into six-sided columns.

But if the changes in temperature and the amount of water in the air are just right, thin branches may grow on a baby snowflake as the snowflake travels in the air.The six-pointed starbursts ( 星放射状) are usually the prettiest. They are most likely to form when the weather is either just below freezing or around 5 degrees.

Be a snowflake watcher

1.A gentle snowfall is best.

2.Take a magnifying glass (放大镜) and a piece of black paper outside and wait a few minutes for the paper to get cold.

3.Hold the paper out flat until a few flakes have landed on it.Quickly examine them with the magnifying glass.Look for the best ones, or see how many types you can find.

I learned about life from an ant farm. When I was seven years old, my family created one.First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box, and then we waited for the live ants to arrive.Shortly after the chilly ants were dropped into the glass structure, they got to work making tunnels.I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do.After hours of staring, I realized that the ants had assigned jobs. With my mom ' s help, I kept a diary of what happened each day and named the ants.

One day a tragedy struck the ant farm. The pages of the diary, still wrinkled where tear drops fell, indicate the depth of the tragedy.' I had put my face so close to the structure that I accidentally tipped it over, caving in all the tunnels.Although the ants survived their earthquake, one by one they began to die.I was terrified as I watched them give up their tunnel-building to carry the bodies to a comer of the farm.My mother reported that the ants were dying of "frustration." They simply could not stand the reality that their tunnels had been destroyed.

Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm.Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.Over the years, I came to realize the ants were a study in the benefits of teamwork.Working together, they were able to create an amazing world for themselves.I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.Day in and day out, each labored at their task. The ant farm showed that teamwork and perseverance are indeed two key ingredients to success. But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (不幸、灾祸) is a natural part of life,

and must be accepted.Unlike the ants, humans cannot give up when they face disappointment.Unlike the ants, we have to realize that if a tunnel caves in, we just have to

build another.Giving up, I say, is not a choice.

67.The family created an ant farm in a glass box because it was easy _____.

A.for the ants to live in B.to get sun light in

C.to keep the sand clean D.for the boy to observe

68.What made the pages of the diary wrinkled?

A.The tears. B.The earthquake.

C.The ants. D.The tragedy.

69.What did the writer finally realize?

A.Perseverance is the only way to success.

B.Humans cannot give up when facing adversity.

C.People should admire anyone for their hard work.

D.His mother taught him much more.

70.When did the writer draw a more important lesson from his experience?

A.Before he was seven years old.

B.When he was seven years old.

C.Immediately after the tragedy.

D.Many years after the tragedy.

When children celebrate a wedding anniversary for the parents, it' s not just a celebration for the parents but for the entire family. There are many types of wedding anniversary gifts.____71_____ Choosing a gift for parents that involves the whole family makes the event more special for them.

Budget

Children shouldn't spend too much money on the gift.Parents usually know the financial conditions of their children. 72

Considerations

An anniversary gift for parents should have two characteristics: customized (订制的) ,and something they can use together. It is not a good idea to choose a gift that only looks good. The gift is celebrating their time spent together, so it has to be something they both will enjoy.

Family celebration

One of the biggest achievements of parents is raising children. So some children decide to buy an anniversary gift that involves the entire family such as a special family vacation.

73

A party as a gift

_____74_____ If it is a milestone anniversary such as a 25th or 50th wedding anniversary, some children choose to hold a party. The guest list includes all family members who have been close to them over the years.

Family-themed gifts

One choice is a family photo taken by a professional or even a painting created by a professional artist using a family photo as the image to be painted. 75 If the parents don' t have a DVD player, the player can be included as part of the sift.

A.Sometimes gifts don' t have to be objects bought with money.

B.Brothers and sisters can share the cost of the party.
