2.What did you study before? (本科专业问题)

--- I studied German.

--- Why did you choose this major?

--- I chose this major because my Englishteacher recommended me. My English was very good in my high school, so myEnglish teacher thought that I could use my advantage to learn anotherlanguage. German is kind of similiar with English and Xi'an InternationalStudies University is also famous for teaching German. So I chose to studyGerman there.

--- Did you like this major?

--- Well, it's a good major, but I'minterested in Hospitality Management more since I have made up my mind to dealwith hotel work in the future.

3.Why not continue your studies inChina?

Because my career goals are to become asenior executive in a 5-star hotel within 5 years and set up my own hotel within10years. In order to achieve these goals, I need advanced and professional knowledgein Hospitality Management. The UScan provide the best opportunity for me to get what I need.

You know, there is still a gap betweenChinese educational level and the American’s. The US has the best educationalrecourses and models in the world, and the American education combinespractical experience with classroom theory while the Chinese education focusesmore on theory.

Moreover, hospitality industry is highly developedin America. So I can learn the latest information about hospitality management to enrich myknowledge.

4.How long will you study in USA?

My I-20 form says the normal length of my programlasts 3 years but the school official told me that most students completewithin 2 years of full-time study. So I will work hard to finish mystudieswithin 2 years.

5. I think your plan is hard to fulfill, I don’t believe your plan. How can you prove thatto me?

I know my ambitions are high, but I have confidenceand determination to fulfill them. They are feasible!

Basically speaking, China is themost suitable place for me to achieve my goals. On one hand, I can get thestrongest relationship and money support in China since my parents and most ofmy friends live here. On the other hand, China is more suitable to startbusiness because of its huge labor market, lower investment costs and thegovernment support.

As far as I know, starting a business needsabundant knowledge, experiences, capital and social network. I can get suchknowledge from my studies in the US. Then I will gather practicalexperiences by working in China’shotel industry for years, at the same time I will enlarge my social networkhere. When I have collected sufficient money and the time is right, I will beable to set up my own hotel.

6.Who will support the costs of your studies?

My parents will support the costs of mystudies. They have fixed income, stock earnings and bank savings for manyyears.

My mother works as (母亲职位) and her annual income thisyear is about (今年年收入). My fatherworks as (父亲职位)and hisannual income this year is about (今年年收入).Here are their Certificates of Employment and Income and my familyasset.

Specifically speaking, I will start off bypreparing sufficient capital, social network and China’shotel market information by working in China’s hotel industry for 3 or 4years. When I have improved my ability and gathered enough experiences in thisarea, I will be able to set up my own hotel. My hotel will apply the advancedWestern technology and patterns I have learned in the US into China’sspecial conditions, making it suitable for China’s market. And as my hotelbrand is becoming mature, I will expand my business to the other partsof China. (Why in Hainan?)

Because I have been living here most of mylife, I am familiar with this place and most of my relatives and friends arehere, so they will give me a lot of help, support and advice in my business.Meanwhile, Hainan is recognized as an International Tourism Island, tourism is itspillar industry. More and more international star hotels have been located heresuch as Hilton, Marriot, Sheraton etc, so its hospitality industry is verypromising.

My cousin isalso an executive general manager in a resort, when I was a Junior I spent someof my vacations in the resort where she was working, since then I developedmore interest in hotels and I made up my mind to deal with hotel work in thefuture. I also found out that Chinais very short of talented people in star hotels, especially those withgoodforeign language skills and foreign educational backgrounds. I can speak2foreign languages, so with the advanced education in the US and myknowledge inChinese culture, I will gain the upper hand in the Chinese hotelmarket.

12.Why do you change your major?

Before I entered the University, I didn’thave avery clear and detailed career plan. When I was a Junior, I spent some ofmy vacations in the resort where my cousin was working as an executive general manager.Since then I developed more interests in hotels and I made up my mindto dealwith hotel work in the future. My cousin also told me that China is veryshort of talented people in star hotels, especially those with good foreignlanguage skills and foreign educational backgrounds. I can speak 2foreignlanguages, so with the advanced education in the US and my knowledge in Chineseculture, I will gain the upper hand in the Chinese hotel market.

On the other hand, China is more suitable to startbusiness because of its huge labor market, lower investment costs and thegovernment support. In comparison, hospital ity industry and education arehighly developed in the US,there is no shortage of talented people, the competition there is higher, sothis will be difficult for me to reach my goals.

In addition, China is very short of talentedpeople in star hotels, especially those with good foreign language skills andforeign educational backgrounds. I can speak 2 foreign languages, so with theadvanced education in the USand my knowledge about Chinese cultures, I will gain the upper hand in theChinese hotel market.

Considered all the reasons I havementioned, I will come back to China.

14.You have too little working experience, you may not understand your future clearly. Ithink you should stay inChinato collect more working experiences before pursuing a Master’s Degree abroad?

Well, even though working experiencesareimportant in this field, my undergraduate background makes it hard for metofind a relevant job in a hotel. However, if I go to the US to studyHospitalityManagement, I will be qualified to get a good job in the hotelmarket. This isthe fastest way to reach my goals. Moreover, I have received theadmissionletter from FIU, I really cherish this opportunity to study there, soI hope Ican get your support.

I can speak 2 foreign languages, so with theadvanced education in the USand my knowledge about Chinese cultures, I will gain the upper hand in theChinese hotel market.

16.Why don’tyou want to study in other countries?

As far as I know, many European countrieslike UK and Switzerlandhave a short period of education for Master’s Degree, one year or one year anda half at most. This kind of educational system is not very good for me todigest the knowledge, considered that I have no educational background inHospitality Management before.

Moreover, they are smaller countriescompared to the US,so their markets are smaller. There won’t be many internship opportunities forme.

17.What will you do during your vacations inAmerica?

I will do some part-time job in hotels thatmy University provides during my vacations, so I can consolidate my knowledgewith practice and enrich my experiences.

18.You can also make more of this kind of money in theUS, don’t you want to earn more?

Compared to Chinese hotels, American hotelsmay pay more salaries to their staff. However, that’s not my final goal, myfinal goal is to set up my own hotel and be my own boss, this will get muchmore benefits than working for others in a hotel.

In order to set up my own hotel, I muststart off by working in China,so I can enlarge my social network here. Besides, China is more suitable for startingbusiness because of its huge labor market, lower investment costs and the governmentsupport. In comparison, hospitality industry and education are highly developedin the US,there is no shortage of talented people, the competition there is higher, sothis will be difficult for me to reach my goals.

I applied to 2 universities. One is FIU andthe other is University of South Carolina. Theyboth have accepted me. But USC just informed me of my acceptance a few daysago, so I haven’t received its paper admissions. But since FIU is my priority,I decide to choose this one instead of waiting for the other one.

In August I began my application process. At first I filled out an application form online and paid 30 dollars for theapplication fee, and then mailed my package containing my Official UniversityTranscripts, recommendation letters, back letter etc.

I got the paper admission at the end ofOctober.

My short term goal is to become a senior executivein a 5 star hotel, and according to the hotel information, hotel executives areranked 6th among China’s top 10 occupations that pay million salaries, but whatI want is not just a job but a career. My final goal is to set up a hotel inChina like the 7 Days Inn, and such a budget hotel can make benefits about 1million yuan a year. If I need to further my study later in mywork, I will consider.
